Re-registering in the Netherlands

You need to re-register if you are returning to live in the Netherlands after living abroad. Make an appointment with our municipality if you will be residing in Ouder-Amstel. You can call Civil Affairs department (020) 496 21 21.

Description

It is important that you have lived in the Netherlands before and that you emigrated abroad after October 1994. 

Conditions

Did you leave for abroad before October 1994? In that case, it concerns an 'initial registration'. Please refer to Initial registration in the Netherlands for that.

If you do not have a European nationality: proof that the Immigration and Naturalization Service (IND) has approved your stay.

Costs

Re-registering is free of charge.

Term

You have 5 working days after your arrival in the Netherlands to register with the municipality.

Procedure

Here's how to re-register in the Netherlands:

Visit the municipality in person. If your partner and/or children are also re-registering, they should come in person as well.

Bring along:

  • Your valid identity document indicating your nationality;
  • A copy of your signed purchase or rental agreement;
  • If you are moving in with someone else: written permission from the main occupant (pdf, 89 kB) and a copy of a valid identity document of the main occupant;
  • If you do not have a European nationality: proof that the Immigration and Naturalization Service (IND) has approved your stay;
  • For people from Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, Saba, Sint Eustatius, or Sint Maarten: proof of deregistration;
  • Documents proving that during your stay abroad, you have, for example, gotten married, divorced, or had children (if applicable)."
